Understanding Cellulite In Your 20's, 30's 40's, 50's

Cellulite is common body condition which can occur around the thighs, derriere and upper arm area depending on genetics, diet, exercise and overall lifestyle habits.

Generally cellulite is produced by collagen fibers that weaken over time which leads to fat, lymphatic fluid and water clumping together and being pushed upwards.

The effect of cellulite and how it should be treated can differ depending on someone’s age and how long they have suffered with cellulite for.

What Can I Expect From Cellulite In My 20's?

Most women do not have a serious problem with cellulite in their 20's, however it can sometimes be brought on by the reasons below.

  • Genetics

  • A result of taking the contraceptive pill from an early age

  • Being overweight already from a teenager

  • Being a smoker

In your 20's cellulite is still manageable and in quite a few cases reversible. Metabolism and energy levels are high, so dieting and exercise can work wonders. This is the right age to undergo a strict low carb diet or take up interval training, with predictably impressive results.

If you are in your 20's and suffer from cellulite, start working on reducing it now before it's too late. It is easy to fall in the trap of “I'm fine”. However if your cellulite is already visible, it's established, so waiting for it to disappear on its own will not help - it will be too late by then. Quit smoking, reduce drinking, sugar and indulgent food now to look your best now and in your 30's and beyond.

How Can I Treat Cellulite In My 30's?

Most of my clients start caring about their cellulite at the age of around 28 - 32. This is when the complacent attitude mentioned above starts showing its results. The cumulative effect of excess food, sugar, smoking, drinking and hormonal contraception during the 20's starts showing it’s effects, even on slim women.

The 30's is also the time when women focus more on work, career and success and perhaps do excess overtime, which for most women means 10 - 12 hours sat at a desk which of course this its toll on on the body.

The most important advice at this age is “get out there an exercise”. Undo the damage sitting down all day does to you body. And discover healthy eating! Now is the time to replace (at least some of the) cocktails with berry and protein smoothies.

Most women fall pregnant in their 30's these days, and this adds a layer of cellulite every time. Keep eating healthily and walk a lot during pregnancy and then embark on a healthy fitness regime after, to regain your shape.

How Can I Fix Cellulite In My 40's?

Stress takes a toll on the body and leads to skin looseness and water retention, and also fat accumulation around the stomach area.

The 40's is the time when stress and neglecting yourself for decades show their cumulative effect. Lower metabolism means less exercise and the end result is, as mentioned above, loose skin, more fat and water retention. Insulin resistance also becomes more evident in the 40's, so now it’s time to really quit sugar for good.

Remember I mentioned treatments and creams work best in the 20's? Well, treatments are creams are essential in your 40's - just exercise and diet will not fix it anymore. Accompany those with some interval training to boost your metabolism and get more results from the time your spend exercising.

What Can I Do About Cellulite In My 50's?

In many respects, the 50's is a continuation of the 40's when it comes to cellulite. There is still skin laxity and water retention but also more fibrotic cellulite (scar tissue).

Estrogen (natural or from contraception), a major contributing factor for cellulite, is not an issue for some women in their 50s, yet the results of decades of fat tissue being exposed to estrogen (including a couple of pregnancies) become quite apparent. On the other hand, for those who transition into HRT, estrogen keeps creating new cellulite.

Skin tightening treatments are very popular in this age group while cellulite treatments must also focus more on fibrosis than on any other aspect of cellulite.

The advice mentioned above applies also here, but everything probably has to tone down a little: more walking or power yoga and less running is preferred by most women at this age group. No more extreme dieting and change of focus to eating healthily throughout the year - not just before the holidays.
