12 Tried And Tested Lip Balms For Dry Lips
Posted by Laura Rose in Skin Care, Tried & Tested
I don’t know about anyone else, but I’m obsessed with lip balms. I have a lip balm in pretty much every place imaginable; my bedside table, the bathroom cabinet, my boyfriend’s house, my car, my desk at work, my handbag, my gym bag… the list goes on.
Even though I have oily skin my lips have always been super dry and if I’m not careful they get very cracked and painful, hence my excessive lip balm hoarding. So as the weather is still pretty chilly and everyone’s skin is continuing to feel the effects of the cold, I decided to review some lip balms I’d never tried before to see which came out on top and soothed my dry lips the best.
Clarins Hydra-essentiel Lip Balm
What I loved: The smell was amazing and reminded me of turkish delight. The texture was quite thick but it sunk into the lips pretty quickly and didn’t feel sticky. The Clarins Hydra-essential Lip Balm contains Blue Lotus wax to repair the skin and Organic Cocoa Butter to moisturise, soothe and protect the lips. I also wore this to the gym a few times and it lasted for the whole session regardless of how much I wiped my face and sweated.
What I didn’t like: Nothing! I would definitely repurchase this in the future.
Clarins Hydra-essentiel Lip Balm, £19.50
L’Occitane Ultra Rich Lip Balm
What I loved: Again, the smell of this lip balm was beautifully sweet and was easy to apply because of the squeezy tube. The texture of it was a little bit wet and slippery but it did stay on for a decent amount of time. The L’Occitane Ultra Rich Lip Balm contains 10% Fair Trade Shea Butter to help nourish and repair dry lips and leave them feeling soothed.
What I didn’t like: It tasted a little funny so I would avoid licking your lips while wearing the L’Occitane Ultra Rich Lip Balm. I also had to re-apply it a few times throughout the day, but not excessively.
L'Occitane Ultra Rich Lip Balm, £9.00
Glamglow Poutmud Wet Lip Balm Treatment
What I loved: I’m not usually a fan of pot lip balms as they can be quite messy, but I really liked this Wet Lip Balm Treatment from Glamglow. The texture was really smooth and easy to apply, it’s definitely something you could keep in your handbag. It contains a hydrating blend of Cocoa, Murumuru, Shea Butter and Sweet Almond Oil and also has a refreshing minty scent thanks to the Moroccan Mint Leaf. It stayed on for a really long time and did a great job at keeping my lips hydrated all day.
What I didn’t like: The pot is quite small so I imagine I’d run out of it quite quickly.
Glamglow Poutmud Wet Lip Balm Treatment, £16.00
Sisley Eye and Lip Contour Balm
What I loved: As an eye cream this Sisley Eye and Lip Contour Balm is great. It has a really refreshing gel texture that feels beautiful under the eyes and really helps to hydrate delicate skin. It’s formulated with Tomato Extracts and Witch Hazel to dramatically reduce under-eye puffiness while combating the appearance of fine lines.
What I didn’t like: As a lip balm I didn’t rate this product at all. It worked so well as an eye cream but the texture was all wrong for a lip balm. I had to continuously apply it to achieve any kind of moisturising payoff and it doesn’t smell the best either. If you want an effective, cooling eye cream I’d recommend this any day, but it’s pretty useless as a lip balm.
Sisley Eye and Lip Contour Balm, £90.00
What I loved: I’m always excited to try new products from Nars and this Afterglow Lip Balm was no acception. The packaging is a beautiful reflective pink colour to match the cult favourite Orgasm shade of the lip balm. It applied really smoothly and had a hint of colour and shimmer, it’s definitely something you could wear without makeup or even to the gym without looking odd. It stayed on for a good amount of time and kept my lips hydrated.
What I didn’t like: I would have liked the pigment to be slightly stronger and more noticeable, however I’d still buy it again as I loved it so much.
Nars Afterglow Lip Balm, £22.00
No7 Lovely Lips Lip Balm with SPF 15
What I loved: This lip balm from No7 applied so so easily, it literally glided across my mouth. It’s enriched with Vitamin E and Beeswax to keep lips feeling soft and smooth all day. It also has the added bonus of containing SPF 15 which is so important even when the weather is dull and dreary.
What I didn’t like: Nothing!
No7 Lovely Lips Lip Balm with SPF 15, £9.00
The Body Shop Born Lippy Lip Balm
What I loved: The Body Shop Born Lippy Lip Balm is something I’ve wanted to try for a long time, mainly because it’s so affordable and has so many great flavours! But I have to admit I was a little underwhelmed.
What I didn’t like: The texture was quite slippery and it looked a bit greasy on the lips. It was also quite messy and sticky so I’d recommend having this as a ‘house’ lip balm. The smell was nice but was very strong and artificial, and it didn’t really help to keep my lips very moisturised.
The Body Shop Born Lippy Lip Balm, £2.50
Burt’s Bees Replenishing Lip Balm
What I loved: This Replenishing Lip Balm from Burt’s Bees has become one of my new favourites. It smells of gorgeous Pomegranate and is packed with powerful fruit extracts and beeswax to richly moisturise and soften lips. It has the tiniest hint of colour which helped to lift my face when I wasn’t wearing any makeup.
What I didn’t like: Even though it smells fab it doesn’t taste so great, so try to avoid getting it in your mouth.
Burt's Bees Replenishing Lip Balm, £3.99
NUXE Baume Lèvres Reve De Miel Honey Lip Balm
What I loved: Broken record alert, but I loved the smell. It’s blended with Lemon peel, Grapefruit and Honey to give the most gorgeous citrusy sweet scent. The pot size is pretty decent and a little goes a long way so you won’t need to repurchase it often. It was really easy to apply and kept my lips soft and smooth all day.
What I didn’t like: As the pot is made from glass it wouldn’t be suitable for travelling.
NUXE Baume Levres Reve De Miel Honey Lip Balm, £10.00
Elemental Herbology Lip Nourish Plumping Lip Balm
What I loved: This lip balm is jam packed full of moisturising ingredients such as avocado oil, baobab oil, and inca inchi oil. They all work together to help rehydrate very dry lips and protect them from future damage.
What I didn’t like: I found it quite hard to apply this Lip Nourish Plumping Lip Balm from Elemental Herbology as it was a very solid, firm texture. I even put the pot on the radiator to try and warm it up but that didn’t work. Because of that reason I probably wouldn’t use this again as it was a bit of a faff and not very convenient.
Elemental Herbology Lip Nourish Plumpling Lip Balm, £13.50
Decléor Paris Intense Nutrition Lip Balm
What I loved: I really liked the smell of this Decléor Paris Intense Nutrition Lip Balm and it was very moisturising and soothing for my dry lips. It's enriched with Marjoram essential oil, Shea butter and Macadamia to help keep the skin hydrated.
What I didn’t like: The only downside to this lip balm was that the texture was so hard it was very difficult to get any product out of the pot. I had to swirl my finger around in the pot for a long time to ensure I had enough to cover my top and bottom lip.
Decleor Paris Intense Nutrition Lip Balm, £9.00
By Terry Baume De Rose Lip And Nail Balm
What I loved: The Baume De Rose Lip And Nail Balm is By Terry's best seller and I understand why! It's now my favourite lip balm to date. Not only does it smell like roses but it also had a soft, velvety texture. It lasted a long time on my lips, was super easy to apply and wasn't sticky. The "after effect" made my lips look a little plumper and it gave them a nice shine without looking too glossy. The other bonus is that it can also be applied to finger nails to avoid dry cuticles.
What I didn't like: Nothing, this is my new go to lip balm for sure!
By Terry Baume De Rose Lip And Eye Balm, £39.00
Overall I thoroughly enjoyed my lip balm exploration exercise and discovered some new favourites along the way that I’ll be sure to incorporate into my daily routine.
