Tried & Tested: Will Burt's Bees Lips Crayons Really Make Me Smile?

This month we are lucky enough to have natural brand Burt’s Bees as our brand of the month, which frankly works perfectly with our floral theme for spring. (So congratulations all round here for such a concise piece of beauty Journalism).

This week I was tasked with the (oh so hard..) work of trialing Burt’s Bees new lip crayons. Now I am someone with literally hundreds of lipsticks - my go to beauty fix is a slick of red lippy. It works for every occasion from office to dinner, to perking up a pale face the morning after. I have my favourites and every Christmas I get a new Chanel red number under the tree, so I’m not someone who trifles with lip colours that don’t go the distance. These crayons have got some serious work to do to stand up to my vigorous testing.

So a little background on these colourful Burt’s beauty's...

They come in “6 creamy, full-coverage shades of matte lip colour in a lip crayon for truly beautiful lip colour”. They are supposedly lightweight, moisturising and comfortable for everyday wear. The formula is infused with Shea Butter, Kendi Oil, and Jojoba Oil, for colour that doesn’t dry.

Their selling points:

• Creamy matte colour and moisture-rich wear

• For everyday wear either alone or layered under a Lip Gloss or Lip Shine

• Precise application in a playful form without the hassle and mess of sharpening

• No added flavour or fragrance

• Hydrates and moisturises lips, leaving them feeling soft and smooth

BIG promises from Burt’s. The question is do they deliver?

I have two shades to road test, 3 meals to eat, drinks with a friend and a 6 mile cycle to get through. Not to mention, I’m a real talker, can they even last the day with me gabbing away?

First up is Burt’s Bees Lip Crayon in Napa Vineyard £8.99. A gorgeous deep, claret red. I smooth it on (paring it with a nude face, a hint of peachy blush and a natural but bold brow if you’re interested) and set about my day.

Breakfast juice and porridge down and it’s still very firmly in place. So much so that my colleague asks me if I’ve just reapplied it. Nope, I sit there smugly with application 1 still very much in place. Having just suffered with the dreaded flu my skin and lips are still a little on the parched side and I was worried the crayon may exacerbate it further. However the moisturising shea butter really did do the trick and keep my lips feeling nourished all day. Also as an added bonus a lovely woman bounded up to to me in the street, complimented me on my glamorous look and asked what colour it was. As I was wandering along holding a Sainsbury's sandwich on a particularly windy street, I can only thank the lipstick for this compliment. I am officially SOLD on Nappa Vineyard.

Next up is the more subtle Burt’s Bees Lip Crayon in Hawaiian Smolder £8.99 this is the perfect pop of pinky colour. I have naturally red lips that always tend to show through pink lipsticks, so I often look like I've half eaten them. However the creamy formula completely covered my natural colour and offered the perfect perky pink in return. The ideal colour for everyday wear, it makes you look fresh and awake without making too bold a statement. For those who a a little lipstick phobic this is the IDEAL colour for you to trial.

Overall I would say Burt’s Bees absolutely nailed their new lip colours, and both shades will have a firm place in my makeup bag. It also goes to show that natural brands are really catching up on the formulations of brands with more man-made ingredients, which I find super exciting as I’m a big believer of taking care of what I put on my skin. Now I’m off shopping...for the other 4 shades!
